Fisheries Act 1985 Amendments To Focus On Increasing Fine, Protecting Marine Habitat

Kuala lumpur: The amendments to the Fisheries Act 1985 (Act 317) which are expected to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat sitting starting July 21 will focus on strengthening existing regulations, including increasing fines for violations of fisheries regulations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the amendments involve efforts to enhance protection for marine parks and impose stricter controls on the use of fishing gear like dragon nets, which can harm habitats and fish spawning sites. The act aims to bolster existing enforcement, including tighter surveillance of waters. New policies are being considered for amendment as advocated by stakeholders.

Mohamad Sabu highlighted that the current fines are lower compared to those in Indonesia and Thailand. The amendments will coordinate efforts to strengthen enforcement. The proposal includes a ban on fishing in and inspection of fish caught in polluted waters to ensure food safety. Additionally, a ban on the sale of turtles will be detailed in the amendment to prevent species extinction.

He noted that the draft amendment resulted from discussions with stakeholders, including elected representatives and players in the fishing industry. The first reading of the amendment is set for this sitting, with the second reading expected in August.
