Ferry Sinking in Bali Strait: One Malaysian Confirmed Dead, Search Efforts Continue

Kuala lumpur: Only one Malaysian has been confirmed dead following the ferry sinking tragedy in the Bali Strait on the night of July 2. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that there have been no additional casualties involving Malaysian citizens, with search and rescue operations still underway.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Hasan, speaking at the UMNO Kuala Langat Division Delegates’ Meeting, reported, “I have been informed that a Malaysian was involved (killed) and has already been laid to rest. So far, there are no new victims involving Malaysians, but search efforts are ongoing.” The meeting, which took place at Dewan Sri Jugra, was attended by 460 representatives from 90 branches.

Mohamad indicated that any relevant department is ready to assist the family of the deceased. The media reported that the remains of Malaysian national Fauzey Awang, 55, who perished in the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry tragedy, were laid to rest in East Java on Friday night. This fulfilled his last wish to be buried near his teacher’s grave and close to his wife in Indonesia. Although originally from Terengganu, Fauzey frequently traveled to Indonesia every three months to visit his wife.

The ferry, carrying 65 passengers and 22 vehicles, sank in the Bali Strait approximately 30 minutes after departing from Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, in East Java to Bali. As of Friday, 47 individuals have been identified, including 30 survivors and 17 deceased. Several people remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
