Kuala lumpur: Malaysian Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has strongly criticized TikTok’s decision to appoint a former Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) soldier as its hate content manager in New York. He expressed concerns about the platform’s integrity and the potential impact on algorithms controlling content for Malaysian users.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi conveyed his dissatisfaction after learning of the appointment, emphasizing that he contacted TikTok’s Chief Executive Officer to lodge an initial protest. He reported that the response he received was dismissive, claiming the appointment was unrelated to the ongoing issues in Palestine. Fahmi, however, disagrees, fearing it could lead to pro-Zionist content influencing Malaysian users on TikTok.
Fahmi further questioned TikTok’s decision to offer a high salary to the appointee amid layoffs, including in Malaysia, as the company transitions towards artificial intelligence (AI). He announced plans for a meeting with TikTok’s representatives in Malaysia, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the Attorney-General’s Chambers to seek further clarification.
The Minister did not dismiss the possibility of taking stern action against the platform, which is licensed in Malaysia, but clarified that any decision would be made following the meeting next month. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to protect local users’ interests while ensuring the platform remains free from elements opposing Malaysia’s principles. Fahmi reiterated Malaysia’s consistent support for unconditional freedom for Palestine.
