English Proficiency Boosts Malaysia’s Global Competitiveness: AMCHAM

Kuala lumpur: The American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) emphasizes the importance of strengthening English language skills, particularly for new workforce entrants, as a crucial element in unlocking opportunities, fostering innovation, and enhancing Malaysia’s long-term competitiveness in global supply chains.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, AMCHAM’s chief executive officer Datuk Siobhan Das stated that the business chamber urges stakeholders to invest further in English language education and training to ensure Malaysia remains an attractive destination for investors, multinational corporations, and global talent. She noted that English is not just a skill but a strategic business imperative for innovation and growth in the region. Companies anticipate that the importance of English will continue to rise over the next five years, driven by globalisation and workplace digitalisation.

A recent survey conducted by AMCHAM revealed that nearly 40 companies regard English proficiency as essential for success in the Malaysian workplace. Nearly all respondents rated the use of language as ‘very important,’ with most reporting that up to 100 per cent of their workforce uses English daily for communication, reporting, training, and presentations. The survey also highlighted that beyond day-to-day operations, proficiency in English is seen as a key driver of career advancement, facilitating international collaboration, professional networking, and increased access to global opportunities.

Additionally, English proficiency plays a decisive role in hiring and promotion decisions, making it a key factor in the career growth of local talent within multinational organisations. Siobhan further mentioned that as global organisations, AMCHAM’s members rely on English to unify diverse teams, ensure clarity in client communications, and open opportunities for Malaysian talent to excel in international roles.
