El Nino: Selangor’s Seven Major Dams Maintain Satisfactory Water Levels Amid Southwest Monsoon

Selangor: The capacity at all seven major dams in Selangor remains at a very satisfactory level, with overall water storage exceeding 75 percent despite the country entering the peak of the Southwest Monsoon.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin stated that dam water levels are anticipated to remain stable over the next three to six months through systematic water release management based on the intake requirements of water treatment plants (LRA). "The release of water is conducted following standard operating procedures (SOP) to extend the lifespan of the reservoirs, using alternative water source ponds to ensure a consistent water supply to the population," Jamaluddin explained.

The state government has identified and is upgrading over 140 alternative water source ponds and several former mining ponds under the Selangor Off River Storage Scheme (SORSS) to enhance raw water storage capacity. Jamaluddin noted that a strategic mitigation plan has been activated with close supervision by the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) to guarantee the stability of raw water supply at all major dams, amid the risk of extreme hot weather during the peak of the Southwest Monsoon, expected to last until September.

"The state administration is fully aware of the challenges presented by the Southwest Monsoon, and we are prepared to face any eventuality," Jamaluddin asserted. The effects of the El Nino phenomenon necessitate intensified efforts from all relevant agencies to ensure uninterrupted water supply and environmental sustainability throughout the dry season.

Monitoring and enforcement in high-risk areas, such as industrial zones, will be enhanced to prevent unlawful effluent discharges that could affect water quality. Jamaluddin emphasized that water quality monitoring has been strengthened through 24-hour patrol operations and continuous sampling at main river basins to safeguard LRA operations from potential pollution incidents.

Furthermore, Jamaluddin mentioned that the state government will collaborate with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to implement cloud seeding operations if dam storage levels fall to the critical threshold of 50 percent.
