Education Autonomy and Healthcare Developments Highlight MA63 Talks

Kuala lumpur: Education autonomy for Sarawak will be among the main agendas at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Technical Committee meeting tomorrow, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He mentioned that Sarawak is seeking approval to use English as the medium of instruction, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the main challenge lies in the national policy that mandates uniformity in curriculum and language. However, Fadillah noted that one approach under consideration is to maintain the existing policy while incorporating additions like the Dual Language Programme (DLP), which is currently being implemented in Sarawak.

Another significant topic on the agenda is the establishment of a cancer centre in Sarawak to improve healthcare access for the state’s residents. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian previously indicated that the proposed centre is expected to have at least 310 beds to cater to long-term patient care needs. This figure is an increase from the initial proposal of 200 beds, with the adjustment following recommendations from medical experts and health officials involved in the planning process.
