Durian Frenzy: Over 3 Tonnes Sold In 12 Hours At KPDN 2025 Southern Zone Carnival

Puteri harbour: More than three tonnes of durian, equivalent to about 2,000 fruits, were sold out in 12 hours on the first day of the Rahmah MADANI Sale in conjunction with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) 2025 Southern Zone Carnival held at Puteri Harbour yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, durian trader Mohd Hairul Mohd Aziz, 43, from Batu Pahat, attributed the overwhelming response from visitors to the affordable promotional prices. The premium Musang King variety was offered at prices ranging from RM25 to RM35 per kilogramme, compared to the market price of RM40 to RM60. ‘From 10 am to 10 pm yesterday alone, we managed to sell almost three tonnes of durian. Today, we’re targeting to sell another four tonnes, insya-Allah,’ he said at his sales tent at the carnival.

Commenting on the Eat Local Fruits campaign launched yesterday by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Mohd Hairul described the initiative as timely in highlighting Malaysia’s agricultural produce. He noted that events like this allow locals to enjoy premium durians that are usually exported.

Mohd Hairul also expressed support for the expansion of the Rahmah MADANI Sale and campaigns to promote local fruits, especially as some imported fruits are now subject to Sales and Services Tax (SST). He emphasized the excellent quality of Malaysian fruits and encouraged them to be the rakyat’s first choice.

Visitors to the carnival also welcomed the campaign for its affordable prices and potential to boost demand for local agricultural produce. Siti Rubiah Manshor, 51, stated that local fruits should be prioritized, especially given the current economic climate. She advocated for consistent implementation of the campaign to eat local fruits.

The event also saw the launch of the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) 2025 by Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. Themed ‘Jom Beli Lokal’ (Let’s Buy Local), the campaign aims to expand the reach of local products and reduce dependence on imported goods.
