Kuala lumpur: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa emphasized that maintaining urban cleanliness is a collective responsibility that should not be solely entrusted to local authorities. She highlighted the need for a shared commitment involving government agencies and the public to address this issue effectively.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Zaliha’s remarks were in response to a recent incident where His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, criticized the cleanliness of Jalan Gallagher during an unannounced visit. The King’s observations prompted immediate action from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which undertook cleaning efforts and other remedial measures in the area.
Dr Zaliha expressed her belief that DBKL has specific programs aimed at cleanliness projects but stressed the importance of proactive rather than reactive measures. She pointed out that neglecting any area could compromise the city’s cleanliness, underlining the necessity of continuous efforts to maintain it.
These statements were made during the launch of the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership (IKLIM) Project. The media had detailed how His Majesty’s surprise 3.2-kilometre walkabout revealed issues such as clogged drains, roadside garbage, and obstructive tree branches on pedestrian paths.
In response to the King’s reprimand, DBKL initiated a swift clean-up operation addressing the concerns, which included clearing drains, removing litter, trimming branches, and managing the local wildlife disturbances.
