Kuala lumpur: The Dewan Rakyat today passed a motion by the Standing Orders Committee to amend several provisions in the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders. The motion, tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, was approved by a majority voice vote.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azalina explained that the proposed amendments aim to enhance the level of executive accountability to the Dewan Rakyat, in addition to aligning with the introduction of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025. The changes are intended to elevate the status of Special Select Committees to Standing Select Committees, incorporate several existing practices and conventions into the Standing Orders, and facilitate Members of Parliament in conducting House business.
Azalina stated that the Standing Orders Committee meeting on July 23 had agreed on several amendments. These include changes to the provision on the appointment of members to the Parliamentary Services Commission under the Parliamentary Services Act 2025 by the Committee of Selection. Additionally, other amendments involve the requirement for one day’s notice to refer a bill to the Select Committee and the recall of the House if the sitting lacks a quorum.
