DAP Fully Supports Proposal To Repeal AUKU

Putrajaya: DAP has expressed full support for the government's proposal to repeal the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) 1971, said its secretary-general Anthony Loke. He emphasized that DAP's involvement in the government is not merely to hold office but to contribute to national progress and implement the reforms it has long advocated.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the repeal of AUKU, a move that DAP has championed for decades. Loke highlighted that this proposal is part of a broader agenda to ensure equitable higher education opportunities for all Malaysians, irrespective of racial background.

He delivered these remarks during his policy speech at the DAP 2026 National Conference at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC). Anwar had made the repeal announcement in his presidential policy speech at the PKR 2026 National Congress, stating that the government aims to provide greater freedom and democratic space for the student movement in the country.

The Prime Minister's decision follows a memorandum and feedback from student leaders advocating for comprehensive changes to the Act. The proposal is set to be discussed in the Cabinet meeting next Wednesday.

Since its introduction in 1971, AUKU has undergone seven amendments, including a significant change in 2012 that permitted students to engage in political party activities off campus. The 2024 amendment to Section 16B shifted disciplinary actions from vice-chancellors to the Student Disciplinary Committee. Additionally, Section 15A was amended to allow Student Representative Councils and student bodies to manage funds, subject to existing regulations and laws.
