Communications Ministry Launches Safe Internet Campaign Tour in Northern Zone

Langkawi: The Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has initiated the Safe Internet Campaign Tour at schools in the Northern Zone. This effort aims to enhance online safety and foster a resilient digital community.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Melaka will be the starting point for the tour in the Northern Zone, with plans to expand to other regional schools. The campaign will cover 21 primary schools and seven secondary schools throughout the Langkawi district. The primary aim is to educate primary school students on the responsible use of social media and increase awareness among parents about the internet’s advantages and potential risks.

The campaign’s launch event also saw the presence of the Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC Commissioner General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Minister Fahmi stated that the tour will extend to other zones, targeting over 10,200 schools nationwide by year’s end, leveraging the network of 1,099 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) and 1,878 MADANI Community groups.

The initiative seeks collaboration with Parent-Teacher Associations and Student Representative Councils at public institutions to facilitate outreach. Over 1,800 participants, including students, teachers, parents, and community leaders, attended the launch. The campaign is part of a broader effort to promote digital literacy, particularly among children and teenagers, to address challenges like cyberbullying, online scams, cyber gambling, and child sexual exploitation.

Throughout the year, the campaign expects participation from over 100,000 individuals across the northern zone, including Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak. The initiative follows the campaign’s initial implementation at SK Bidor 2 in Tapah, Perak, which commenced on April 10.
