Azizulhasni Awaits Clear Decision on 2028 Olympic Participation

Kuala lumpur: National track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang is still waiting for a clear decision from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the National Sports Council (NSC) on whether his services will be required as he continues his quest to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azizulhasni emphasized the importance of this decision not only for his plans following the Asian Games in Nagoya and Aichi, Japan, but also for his preparation for the World Championships in Shanghai, China, a critical Olympic qualifying event. While the ministry and NSC have expressed readiness to support him, a definitive decision regarding his participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28) remains pending.

Azizulhasni highlighted the urgency of the matter, stating, "They have to make the decision as quickly as possible. If my services are needed for LA28, then I need to know and I need to plan. If I want to qualify for the Olympics, I will have to fly to Shanghai for the World Championships after the Asian Games. If my services are not needed, then I need to go home and be with my family. I have not seen my family for a long time."

The 38-year-old spoke during a dinner hosted by the Council of Federal Datuks in Malaysia, held to honor him and the 2026 Commonwealth Games medallists at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. He stressed the significance of the World Championships in Shanghai, noting that it offers substantial points crucial for Olympic qualification.

Azizulhasni, known as 'The Pocket Rocketman,' explained that any decision on his future must also involve discussions with his family and sponsors, who have been instrumental in his professional career. He expressed the need to plan his journey with his sponsors, acknowledging their continuous support.

Despite previous indications from the NSC about their willingness to support him, Azizulhasni reiterated the lack of clarity needed for long-term planning. Meanwhile, he mentioned that the national squad is set to leave for Brisbane, Australia, for an extensive training camp before heading to Japan for the Asian Games.

The ceremony also celebrated national athletes who excelled at the Commonwealth Games, with the Council of Federal Datuks in Malaysia presenting RM100,000 in incentives contributed by 12 sponsors.
