Kuala lumpur: Authorities need to investigate the authenticity of a document allegedly containing minutes of a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting that went viral on social media, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that if the document is found to be genuine and classified, its dissemination could have legal implications, especially under the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi mentioned that a police report has been lodged regarding the issue. He refrained from confirming the document’s authenticity, emphasizing that if the document is genuine and classified, the OSA would apply, necessitating caution and discretion in handling such material. He assured that the investigation would be left to the police, and he currently has no further information on the matter.
The purported JAC meeting minutes, allegedly from a meeting held in May, began circulating on social media platforms including Reddit, Facebook, and X, yesterday. Fahmi urged media practitioners to remain vigilant and adhere to existing laws when reporting news to avoid legal repercussions.
When questioned about whether the issue would be addressed in the next Cabinet meeting, Fahmi, who also serves as the MADANI government spokesperson, indicated that the decision would be at the discretion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Fahmi noted that the prime minister is attentive to matters of public interest, suggesting a possibility of it being discussed.
Regarding the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s role in managing the document’s online circulation, Fahmi explained that actions would be based on public complaints, while content removal decisions would rest with the respective platform operators.
