Anwar Calls For Policy Shift To Prepare For A Longer-Living Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a paradigm shift in public policy, urging the nation to move beyond viewing longevity as a demographic trend. Delivering his keynote address at the International Social Wellbeing Conference (ISWC) 2025, Anwar emphasized the need for Malaysia to embrace longevity as a structural transformation requiring proactive reforms in healthcare, social systems, and economic planning.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the importance of investing in health systems, social care, housing, financial tools, and industries that cater to an ageing society. He stressed the necessity of placing a heavier emphasis on preventive care, public health education, and community-based support systems. Anwar urged for a shift from a system focused on treating diseases to one that promotes lifelong wellness.

Anwar also pointed out the economic potential of the global longevity economy, which is projected to exceed USD65 trillion (approximately RM275.8 trillion) by 2030. He described this as a wake-up call for Malaysia to become an initiative-taking leader in promoting health and wellness throughout the lifespan of its citizens.
