Amendments to Postal Services Act to Strengthen Courier Security Expected Next Year

Kuala lumpur: The Communications Ministry is anticipated to present amendments to the Postal Services Act next year, aiming to bolster security measures within the courier industry. Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced the expected legislative changes, which are slated to be tabled during the first or, at the latest, the second Parliament sitting next year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, engagement sessions with courier companies have been ongoing since last year. The ministry has sought the cooperation of these companies to ensure that the products being sent do not pose security or legal issues. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), alongside the Communications Ministry, is reviewing the Postal Services Act to include amendments that cover the courier sector and enhance security measures, as requested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Minister Fahmi Fadzil conveyed these updates to reporters following the TikTok Shop Summit Malaysia, an event officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Prior reports from PDRM indicated an intention to collaborate with MCMC and the Transport Ministry to tighten procedures concerning courier services, delivery of goods, and p-hailing.

Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan highlighted vulnerabilities within the courier and p-hailing services ecosystem, which have been exploited by criminal syndicates to transport illicit substances.
