Kuala kangsar: The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has successfully planted approximately 25,000 MRDI Super 88 (MS88) hybrid durian trees across the country. This planting effort spans around 242 hectares, focusing primarily on Selangor and the east coast states.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MARDI's director-general, Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, highlighted that the MS88 is one of three premium durian varieties developed by the institute since the early 2000s. These premium varieties, including MDUR78 and MDUR79, continue to be favored by durian enthusiasts. The announcement was made during the Duriotourism MARDI Kuala Kangsar programme at the MARDI Agrotechnology Park.
In related developments, Mohamad Zabawi revealed that MARDI is in the process of selecting three new hybrid durian varieties with the potential to become premium options. These varieties are undergoing evaluation for fruit quality, consumer acceptance, and cultivation suitability.
He explained that while several hybrids have been identified for future release, they remain under selection to ensure they meet consumer preferences and are viable for farmers. The names of these varieties are yet to be disclosed, with plans for their launch coinciding with the durian season, allowing the public an opportunity to view and taste them.
