Kuala Terengganu: A significant 76 percent of residents in Terengganu are currently classified as overweight or obese, a rise from 60.8 percent in 2011. This concerning statistic was shared by the state health department’s director, Datuk Dr. Kasemani Embong, highlighting a growing public health issue in the region.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Kasemani emphasized that one in three teenagers in the state is grappling with weight-related issues primarily due to unhealthy eating habits and inactive lifestyles. This trend poses an increased risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, and high blood pressure, which are already prevalent in Terengganu.
Dr. Kasemani pointed out that the persistent use of gadgets and the easy access to unhealthy food among teenagers are significant factors contributing to the problem. She made these remarks at a Fun Run event that was part of the 2025 Obesity Awareness Campaign, organized under the Terengganu State Health Agenda at Dataran Batu Buruk.
In response to the situation, JKNT is enhancing its public health initiatives, including the ‘War On Sugar’ campaign, which aims to inform the public about hidden sugars in food and drinks. Dr. Kasemani also urged residents to increase their consumption of plain water and to focus on preparing healthier meals at home to help reduce sugar intake.
