Kuala lumpur: The Coroner’s Court heard today that Zara Qairina Mahathir had likely not fallen accidentally or been pushed from a standing position next to her hostel corridor’s concrete railing. Dr. Jessie Hiu, a Forensic Pathologist in the Department of Forensic Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, who conducted the post-mortem on the teenager, provided insight into the circumstances surrounding the fall.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Hiu reported that the railing on the third floor was 118 cm high, while Zara Qairina’s height was 154 cm. The difference of 36 cm between the railing and the deceased’s height suggested that the railing was above her center of gravity, making an accidental fall or push from a standing position unlikely.
Dr. Hiu noted that Zara Qairina could have climbed the concrete base and crossed over the metal rails to stand on top of the railing. The scene examination at Block Rabiatul Adawiyah, Asrama Qurratua’yun SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan (TDML), Kinarut, was conducted on August 2 at 12:30 pm, where Dr. Hiu reviewed the deceased’s medical records and imaging reports to provide a professional opinion on the antemortem injuries.
Despite the moderate to advanced decomposition of the body, Dr. Hiu’s examination revealed a sutured laceration at the back of the head, with no skull or facial bone fractures. The body showed bruising and deformity in the left forearm and wrist due to a fracture and wrist joint dislocation, although the brain could not be assessed due to liquefactive changes from decomposition.
