Kuala nerus: Wan Syahmi Hariz Wan Sufazri, a 24-year-old resident of Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus, has been dedicating a significant portion of his salary to the care of stray cats for the past seven years. His journey began when he rescued a weak and sickly female cat, whom he named Nana, from a drain near his former home.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wan Syahmi Hariz’s commitment to stray cats has led him to care for a growing number of felines. Initially starting with Nana, the number of cats under his care increased as his mother brought home more strays from her workplace, and others were found abandoned near their house. At one point, he cared for about 40 cats; currently, he is looking after 26, as some have died or gone missing.
Wan Syahmi Hariz explained that he spends approximately RM1,500 each month on cat food and litter, with costs potentially rising to RM2,500 if any of the cats require medical attention. Despite the financial burden, he is grateful for the support of his parents, who assist both financially and in caring for the cats.
Reflecting on his lifestyle, Wan Syahmi Hariz shared that his entire salary is devoted to the needs of the cats, foregoing personal luxuries that his peers might enjoy. However, he finds fulfillment and gratitude in his ability to care for the abandoned animals, considering them his most valuable treasure. He expressed a dream of opening a proper cat shelter in the future.
The young man has built a cage beside his house to keep the cats, allowing them playtime according to a schedule to ensure their well-being and avoid disturbing neighbors. Although the cage is somewhat cramped, he hopes to expand the enclosure when finances allow, with the initial structure being built with his parents’ help. Wan Syahmi Hariz remains hopeful that, with resources, he can create a more comfortable space for the cats.
