Year One Admission Policy Change Advocated by PM Anwar

Guar kepah: The government's initiative to allow voluntary enrolment of Year One students at the age of six starting next year should be perceived as a step towards enhancing the nation's educational standards, as stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized that this policy should be viewed in the context of providing early exposure to formal education rather than focusing solely on potential negative implications. He highlighted that globally, many countries have adopted the practice of starting formal education at the age of six. Anwar addressed concerns raised by some parties about the readiness of children to start school at this age by explaining the rationale behind the change during the inauguration of the Guar Kepah Archaeological Gallery.

Anwar remarked that early educational exposure could result in more capable learners, ultimately contributing to the nation's progress. He further elaborated on the significance of preparing children through preschool education by the age of five, to ensure they are well-prepared for formal schooling.

In addition to discussing educational reforms, the Prime Minister also spoke about the importance of fully utilizing the Guar Kepah Archaeological Gallery. He urged the organization of various activities to attract both local and international tourists, while also encouraging young people to engage with history, archaeology, art, and culture.

Anwar proposed expanding the area surrounding the gallery in collaboration with the state government to maximize its local potential. The gallery itself stands as a modern facility on a historic shell midden excavation site, turning significant archaeological findings into a valuable public heritage resource.

The development of the gallery was a collaborative effort orchestrated by the Northern Corridor Economic Region, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and the Penang Chief Minister Incorporated. The event was attended by several notable figures, including Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
