Woman, Two Children Arrested Over RM8,000 Welfare Scam In Teluk Intan

Teluk intan: Police arrested a woman and her two children for allegedly cheating a senior citizen of jewellery worth RM8,000 by offering a bogus welfare aid package at a hospital in Teluk Intan on June 29.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stated that the suspects, aged between 22 and 50, were detained during a raid at an apartment in Semenyih, Selangor, on July 3. The 67-year-old victim was at the hospital for a medical check-up when a woman, claiming to be a welfare officer, approached her with an offer of RM2,000 monthly community welfare assistance.

The unsuspecting victim handed over a gold necklace, a pair of gold earrings with a short chain, and three gold rings, only to realize she had been conned when the suspect failed to return. Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin mentioned that police seized clothing believed to have been worn by the suspects during the incident and successfully recovered the victim's jewellery, which had been sold to a pawnshop in Teluk Intan.

He further noted that all suspects have been remanded for four days, from July 4 to July 7, to assist with investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Mohd Alwi also advised the public to be cautious and not to trust individuals offering welfare assistance in exchange for jewellery or cash.
