Woman Set Alight in Betting Dispute Sparks Arrest in Kepong

Kuala lumpur: A personal grudge over a betting dispute is believed to have prompted a 59-year-old local man to set fire to a woman at a betting outlet in Kepong on August 9. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus announced that the suspect was apprehended in Kepong yesterday, and authorities will seek a remand order to aid investigations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 62-year-old woman, employed as a counter attendant at the betting outlet, sustained burns covering approximately 50 percent of her body and remains unconscious. The incident has been described as an act of extreme violence. During a press conference, Fadil confirmed that the suspect was acquainted with the victim, and ongoing investigations aim to gather sufficient evidence before proceeding with court action.

Police have confiscated several items believed to have been utilized in the attack, including a container filled with fuel and a bicycle. The case is currently being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

In a separate development, law enforcement officials seized nearly 80 kilograms of methamphetamine and 30 kilograms of ecstasy during a raid in Brickfields on August 9. The total value of the drugs and assets seized is estimated at RM8.3 million, and a 36-year-old foreign man has been arrested in connection with the raid.

Fadil revealed that the suspect is believed to be Vietnamese but was found carrying a Canadian passport, prompting further checks to verify his nationality. The individual, who has no prior criminal record, is being held in remand until August 20 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Additionally, police seized a Proton X50 valued at approximately RM85,000 and are actively tracking the suspected supplier, middlemen, and other members involved in the drug distribution network.
