Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied that his official visits abroad, including to Brazil to attend the recent BRICS Summit, were merely for “leisure”, but rather as an important effort to establish global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that the objective of his travels was to strengthen relationships and cooperation with global leaders and stakeholders. He highlighted Malaysia’s strategic cooperation with Brazil, noting that it had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil.
Anwar also addressed the frequency of his and several ministers’ participation in ASEAN meetings, stating that these were not merely symbolic. He pointed out that such engagements had tangible outcomes, including the selection of Terengganu as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. This project in Tasik Kenyir aligns with the region’s agenda to implement the ASEAN Power Grid, connecting electricity supply across borders through undersea cables.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of this energy project, stating that it can only be achieved through collaboration between ASEAN, the Federal Government, and state governments. He believes this initiative will position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region.
Additionally, Anwar commented on the rapid growth of AI technology centres, which require substantial energy and water resources. Supporting the ASEAN Power Grid initiative is crucial for Malaysia to cater to this emerging demand.
Anwar further noted Malaysia’s rising respect on the global stage, evidenced by the participation of major powers in recent ASEAN meetings. The involvement of countries such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye reflects confidence in Malaysia’s stability and economic potential. He concluded by stating that these nations view Malaysia as a peaceful, united country with significant trade cooperation prospects.
