Kuala Lumpur: Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) remains committed to its active role in community development, focusing on education, socioeconomics, and environmental sustainability.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UTP’s vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, highlighted the university’s dedication to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through initiatives like ESTREAM WAVES. Additionally, the university is working to empower indigenous communities and inspire future generations of scientists and engineers.
To enhance socio-economic well-being, UTP is collaborating with government agencies and industry partners on projects such as the Perak Tengah Circular Economy and Food Security Hub (HenSeM). This initiative aims to foster sustainable agricultural practices, boost local economies, and position Perak Tengah as a hub for agricultural bioeconomy innovation by 2027.
Furthermore, UTP is committed to environmental sustainability, implementing measures to reduce carbon footprints on campus, promote renewable energy sources like solar power, and encourage sustainable practices in the broader community. Mohamed Ibrahim emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the local community through ongoing partnerships with key stakeholders and influential leaders, with a shared vision of creating a progressive, safe, and inclusive environment for all.
The vice-chancellor expressed gratitude for the continued support from local communities, highlighting the significance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration to achieve shared goals. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to serving the community and contributing to the region’s social, economic, and environmental progress.
In a recent engagement session with community leaders and representatives from Seri Iskandar, Bota, and Tronoh, Mohamed Ibrahim expressed his appreciation for the attendees and underscored the importance of collaboration between the university and surrounding communities. He noted that the positive relationship between UTP and local communities has been instrumental in the university’s achievements over the years, with success closely linked to these relationships since its establishment 28 years ago.
UTP recently celebrated a significant milestone with its rise in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025, moving into the 201-250 band. This marks UTP’s debut among the top 250 universities worldwide, solidifying its position as the leading university in Malaysia and the top private university in ASEAN. Mohamed Ibrahim attributed this achievement to the support from the surrounding community, emphasizing that such success is a collective triumph for the entire community.
