Kuala Lumpur: The National Unity Ministry is implementing various initiatives to boost youth participation in Rukun Tetangga (RT) activities, said Deputy Minister K. Saraswathy. She announced the introduction of the Progressive Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) concept, which involves community-based economic projects aimed at increasing household income, particularly among young people.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Saraswathy highlighted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of RT. Initially formed as a community safety team, RT has evolved to include initiatives such as the Unity Squad and patrol units. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to encourage young people to engage actively within their communities.
The announcement was made during the Terengganu-level Unity Week celebration at Arena Square, where state Welfare, Women’s Development, Family and National Unity Committee chairman Maliaman Kassim was also present. Deputy Minister Saraswathy emphasized that there are currently 8,565 KRT nationwide, with more than 500 in Terengganu, which serve as key pillars in the government’s mission to enhance community unity.
She further noted that the existence of RTs reflects a growing spirit of volunteerism and consensus among Malaysians. RTs are instrumental in addressing community issues or tensions, including those that gain attention on social media, by working closely with authorities such as the Royal Malaysia Police to resolve these situations.
