Unemployment Rate Drops to 2.9% as Malaysia Emphasizes Skilled Talent Development

Johor: The country's unemployment rate dropped to 2.9 per cent last year compared with 3.2 per cent in 2024. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid announced this development, noting that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared the figures during a Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, attributed this positive trend to the government's ongoing focus on cultivating skilled talent through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He highlighted the increased job opportunities in technical fields, facilitated by training at TVET institutions. Ahmad Zahid emphasized the success of efforts to build a skilled technical workforce, citing an impressive employability rate of 99.5 per cent among graduates of TVET institutions under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

Additionally, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the role of the Community Development Department (Kemas) in producing skilled workers through various courses. He encouraged TVET graduates to explore entrepreneurship, recognizing the contributions of Kemas in areas such as sewing, cooking, hairdressing, makeup, and computer skills.

Ahmad Zahid underscored that these achievements reflect the commitment of the ministry and relevant departments to ensure the well-being of the people. He also called on Kemas to prepare a briefing paper on its achievements for presentation to the Cabinet, aiming to keep Federal ministers informed of these developments.
