TTDI Wall Collapse: JKR To Probe Cause, Assess Structural Integrity – Nanta

Kuala lumpur: The Public Works Department (JKR) has been instructed to carry out a detailed technical investigation to determine the actual cause of the flooding incident that led to the collapse of a retaining wall near Phase 1B at Jalan Abang Haji Openg, Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that JKR has also been directed to assess the structural integrity of the affected area and recommend additional mitigation measures without compromise. He emphasized the need for identifying and addressing any weaknesses in implementation, supervision, technical compliance, or site management immediately. "The Ministry of Works (KKR) will not compromise on matters involving public safety," Nanta said in a Facebook post.

Immediate actions have been undertaken at the location, including clearing works at the incident site, removal of hoarding along Jalan Abang Haji Openg, installation of concrete barriers with geotextile over approximately 200 metres, as well as desilting works and repairs to the Erosion and Sediment Control Plan system. These measures are crucial to stabilise the situation and mitigate subsequent risks.

The retaining wall's collapse occurred following heavy rain, coinciding with the project site for the completion of remaining works under the Bukit Kiara Federal Park Administrative Zone Development - Phase 1B. Preliminary reports indicated that the heavy rain between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm led to an overflow of water from the project site. Initial observations suggest that water capacity from the hillside caused an earth bund to rupture and flow into silt trap 1.

Nanta noted that the public drainage system downstream was unable to effectively manage the flow, partly due to utility obstructions in certain sections. This resulted in water ponding, overflow onto the public road, and pressure on the existing retaining wall, leading to its partial collapse alongside the hoarding.

Nanta urged all parties involved in the project to extend full cooperation to the authorities and adhere to all technical instructions issued. He assured that KKR will continue to monitor developments and ensure follow-up actions are taken transparently and responsibly, focusing on public safety.

He extended his sympathies to the affected residents and assured them of KKR's commitment to implementing recovery, stabilisation, and preventive measures promptly to prevent such incidents from recurring.
