Tsunami Sirens Activated Along Sabah Coastlines After Mindanao Quake

Sabah: Tsunami warning sirens have been activated along coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu as a precautionary measure following a powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao, the Philippines, this morning. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup stated that the government, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and relevant security agencies, is closely monitoring the situation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip mentioned that analysis indicated potential tsunami waves of up to 0.4 meters could hit coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu between 10.30 am and noon today. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers about 97 kilometers south of Koronadal City in the Philippines and was felt in parts of Sabah, including Tawau and Semporna.

Arthur urged residents in the affected areas to cooperate and comply with evacuation or safety instructions issued by authorities to prevent any incidents. He advised avoiding coastal areas during the specified period for safety. MetMalaysia will continue to monitor developments closely, including any aftershocks and potential tsunami risks, and will provide updates as necessary. Arthur also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could cause alarm and encouraged praying for the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas.
