Kuala Lumpur: The Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) is expecting around 60 participants for the 48th edition of the RSGC Ladies’ Amateur Open Championship boosted by the introduction of a new incentive where for the first time, the best player from ASEAN will earn a slot in the Maybank Championship ASEAN Qualifying Round 2025.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, organising chairperson Ai-Leen Tan said the tournament scheduled from August 5 to 7 has already attracted entries from countries including Guam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and India. Tan expressed excitement over the tournament’s growing competitiveness over the past decade, highlighting how it has become a significant platform for aspiring golfers aiming to pursue a professional career.
Tan further elaborated on the tournament’s impact, noting that many participants from past editions have transitioned to professional golfing. She emphasized the pride in nurturing talent and providing a stepping stone for women golfers to advance to international competitions.
When questioned about the participation of prominent Malaysian players, Ai-Leen mentioned that they are awaiting confirmation from the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA). She expressed hope that Malaysia’s top golf prospect, Mirabel Ting, would join the tournament. Tan discussed how the championship could offer valuable preparation ahead of the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
Ai-Leen shared insights on Mirabel’s potential participation, revealing that although Mirabel had initially promised to participate, she received a wildcard to play at the Evian in Paris and may consider turning professional by then. The championship, set on the Club’s Championship Course, will feature the Ist Nine of the Old Course and the 2nd Nine of the New Course.
The tournament is open to female amateur golfers aged 12 and above (as of August 3, 2025) with a USGA Handicap Index of 13.4 and below. Tan explained the rationale behind lowering the handicap requirement, emphasizing the desire to attract better golfers and ensure high competitiveness among serious participants.
