Kuala lumpur: Thailand and Cambodia have chosen Malaysia as the venue for their peace negotiations, attributing their decision to the country’s political stability and developing economy, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s pride in assisting in the resolution of the conflict between these two Asian nations, thereby contributing to the region’s peace and stability. He revealed that Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thai Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit are expected to convene in Kuala Lumpur to engage in detailed discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between their countries.
The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with Malaysia’s role in bringing the two nations together for the talks, highlighting the significance of hosting such negotiations in Kuala Lumpur. He shared these remarks during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen’s Day event, with notable attendees including Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
On July 28, a special meeting in Putrajaya, chaired by Anwar in his capacity as the current ASEAN Chairman, resulted in Thailand and Cambodia agreeing to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. This meeting also included an agreement to hold a General Border Committee meeting as part of the ceasefire agreement.
Anwar noted that Malaysia’s successful mediation efforts have gained international recognition, with global leaders, including US President Donald J. Trump, reaching out to express their appreciation. Additionally, Malaysia has received commendations from leaders in Germany, France, and other Asian countries.
The Prime Minister emphasized the extensive diplomatic efforts undertaken, which included communications with President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, ultimately leading to Thailand and Cambodia placing their trust in Malaysia to facilitate peace talks.
