Tan Cheong Min Dedicates World Games Gold to Malaysia as National Day Gift

Kuala lumpur: National wushu queen Tan Cheong Min has dedicated her World Games gold medal to the country as a National Day gift. She expressed that her achievement last Saturday was also an important recognition for the sport, as it was contested as an official event at the World Games for the first time.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cheong Min stated, “This gold medal is not just for me. It is for Malaysia and a gift for this year’s National Day.” She highlighted that previously, wushu was not an official event in the World Games, making the Asian Games and World Championships the highest platforms for the sport. The former world champion shared her pride and happiness over the recognition.

Cheong Min hopes her success will inspire other athletes to strive for excellence and continue to elevate wushu’s status. Her gold medal has contributed to Malaysia’s overall medal haul at the Chengdu Games, which now includes a silver and a bronze, alongside her achievement.

The Melaka-born athlete is not resting on her laurels, as she turns her focus to upcoming competitions. Cheong Min is setting her sights on winning gold at the World Wushu Championships in Brazil this September, followed by the SEA Games in Thailand in December.

In her illustrious career, Cheong Min won her first world title in 2017 in Kazan in the duilian event, and she claimed her second in 2019 in Shanghai in the nandao event.
