Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge Upgrading Project Expected To Begin In October

Pontian: The project to upgrade the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes is expected to begin as early as October, said Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The deputy minister stated that the RM49 million project is anticipated to be completed within three years, involving the widening of the 250-metre bridge’s lanes, including the road leading to the bridge.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Maslan announced that the government has agreed to expand the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge, with construction set to commence by the end of this year. Tender processes will occur in September or October, and Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi will be invited for the project’s groundbreaking ceremony, expected in October.

The project aims to alleviate congestion between the two main bridges in the district. Ahmad elaborated that the new bridge will feature landmark elements or iconic structures to attract tourists to the Pontian district. Two iconic structures, designed like sailboats and pineapple-themed decorations, will be added to the bridge’s sides as unique attractions.

Ahmad expressed hope that these additions would support the government’s efforts to promote Pontian, including Tanjung Piai, as a key tourist destination in Johor, particularly leading up to the Visit Johor Year 2026. Additionally, the Public Works Ministry plans to submit an application to widen the Parit Semerah Bridge at an estimated cost of RM25 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

In related developments, Ahmad mentioned that the Pontian Hospital Expansion Project is scheduled to commence this year, aiming for completion within six months, ahead of the original one-year timeline. Ahmad, along with Ministry of Public Works secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim, previously visited the Public Works Department (JKR) office in Pontian district and project sites, including the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge and Pontian Hospital.
