Melaka: The recent pollution incident in Sungai Air Batu near Kampung Paya Rumput, Sungai Udang, is suspected to have been caused by effluent, with the source currently under investigation, as stated by the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the department’s Corporate Communications Division highlighted that initial checks revealed a significant change in the river’s water color, turning black, which is believed to result from effluent from an unidentified source. The Melaka Department of Environment (DOE) was promptly instructed to initiate an investigation upon receiving information about the incident earlier in the week.
In addressing local residents’ concerns about a possible connection to the nearby Sungai Udang Landfill Site, inspections were conducted at the location. The department reported that no leachate discharge was detected during the inspection. The Melaka DOE will maintain monitoring and periodic sampling to ensure adherence to Environmental Quality Standards.
The statement from the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department also noted that the landfill site is subject to regular monitoring by the DOE, with past enforcement actions taken against the site operator. The state government assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing, with cooperation from various relevant agencies.
The department emphasized that strict actions will be taken against any parties found violating environmental laws. The Melaka government remains committed to prioritizing the safety, health, and well-being of its residents.
