Sukma 2026: Eliza Breaks National Record Twice En Route To Swimming Gold

Sukma: Eliza Tan Ai Shen broke the national record twice en route to winning the women's 100-metre (m) freestyle gold medal in the 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games (SUKMA) at the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre here today. Selangor's Eliza, swimming in Lane 4, clocked 56.78 seconds (s) in the final to emerge victorious, leaving Perak's Nadia Lim (57.67s) and Melaka's Yeow Lynna Yi Jing (58.52s) to settle for silver and bronze, respectively.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Eliza had earlier clocked 57.03s in the heats to erase the previous national mark of 57.11s set by Nadia at the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships in Bangkok in July. The achievement also saw Eliza become the first swimmer to break a national record at SUKMA 2026, before going even faster just a few hours later in the final.

It was Eliza's second gold at SUKMA 2026 after winning the women's 200m freestyle event in 2:05.26s yesterday, which saw her beating Nadia (2:06.79s) and Melaka's Lynna Yeow (2:08.20s). Meanwhile, Eliza said completing the race in under 57 seconds was the culmination of a target she had been chasing for a long time.

'I'm so happy I got that time. I was really happy when I looked up and saw the board. Obviously, I just want to keep getting faster and faster. Maybe I can be the first to break 56 seconds next,' she told reporters after the event here. She also added another gold medal to Selangor's tally after helping the hosts win the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

The Selangor quartet, which also comprised Daniel Scott Williams, Cayden Gooi and Shannon Yan-Qing Tan, clocked 4:00.35s to take gold, while Penang settled for silver in 4:04.55s and Sabah completed the podium in 4:14.51s.
