SUHAKAM Act Amendment and Inflation Concerns to Take Center Stage in Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: Proposed amendments to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Act 1999 and the disparity between inflation and living costs are primary topics in the Dewan Rakyat today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during the question-and-answer session, Teresa Kok Suh Sim (PH-Seputeh) plans to inquire if the Prime Minister intends to amend the SUHAKAM Act. The amendment would potentially enable the commission to generate income independently through training programs and courses, reducing its dependence on government funding.

Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) will direct his questions to the Economy Minister, focusing on the government's evaluation of the gap between the official inflation rate and the escalating cost of living. He seeks clarity on the indicators used to ensure that economic growth is reflected in improved household purchasing power.

In the same session, V. Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) is expected to question the Prime Minister about the status of reviewing land transfers or changes in land use concerning flood retention ponds, especially in Kuala Lumpur.

Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) will pose his questions to the Higher Education Minister, inquiring about the ratio of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields compared to non-STEM fields in higher education institutions. He is also interested in the target number of engineers needed in various disciplines to meet the demands of high-technology industries.

Additionally, the Cybercrime Bill 2026 is slated for its second reading, presented by a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

The Second Meeting of the Dewan Rakyat for the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament is set to run for 16 days, concluding on July 16.
