Strict Enforcement and Fines Urged for Heavy Vehicles Failing Safety Standards

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has called for mandatory regular maintenance for all heavy vehicles, overseen by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM), to ensure roadworthiness. NIOSH emphasizes strict enforcement by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), including heavy fines for non-compliance with safety standards.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, NIOSH vice-chairman Manivanan Gowin highlighted the necessity of periodic and extensive monitoring to prevent unsafe vehicles from operating. He advocates for the mandatory use of advanced technologies such as Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) and telematics to detect mechanical issues proactively.

Gowin also stressed the importance of enhancing driver training and awareness, recommending comprehensive safety training programs for lorry and bus drivers. He believes that understanding road laws and fostering courteous driving habits can significantly reduce accidents.

Strategic collaboration among government bodies, transport operators, and NGOs is crucial for formulating a long-term road safety plan, Gowin noted. NIOSH offers support through technical analysis, accident investigation, and training programs to improve safety standards.

The recent accident on the North-South Highway, which resulted in seven fatalities, underscores the urgent need for reforms in heavy vehicle safety protocols, Gowin stated. NIOSH remains committed to partnering with stakeholders to elevate road safety.
