KANGAR: The Perlis Games are set to undergo a significant rebranding to reflect the unique sports culture of the Perlis people, aiming to ensure that all sports are represented by the state’s natives. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen local participation and foster a distinct identity for Perlis sports.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perlis Youth and Sports, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Mohd Ridzuan Hashim emphasized the collaboration between himself, the Perlis State Sports Council (MSNPs), and the State Sports Association to achieve collective success. He expressed the need for improved management within the State Sports Association, highlighting its role in uniting individuals to promote and develop sports across the state.
Mohd Ridzuan also stressed the importance of aligning the association’s efforts with the state government’s objectives, particularly in ensuring that athletes representing the state in competitions are native to Perlis, given that fu
nding is provided by the state government. The focus will be on enhancing coaching expertise, athlete welfare, and the quality of training centers and tournament organization, prioritizing Perlis residents as key stakeholders in this initiative.
During a press conference following the incentives presentation ceremony, Mohd Ridzuan outlined Perlis’s ambitious target of securing 20 gold medals at the SUKMA 2026, with a focus on eight core sports. He highlighted the ongoing efforts and renewed enthusiasm for training athletes, which will be intensified over the next two years through state-level sports events.
Meanwhile, a statement from the MSNP announced that the Perlis state government, through MSNP, has distributed winning incentives totaling RM497,300 to athletes who earned medals at the SUKMA, Para SUKMA, and Paris Paralympics. Notably, Perlis secured 12 gold medals at the SUKMA 2024 Games and six gold medals at the Para SUKMA.
An outstanding achievement was recorded by Datuk Abdul Latif Romly, who earn
ed a silver medal in the Men’s Long Jump (T20) event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, receiving an incentive of RM80,000 for his remarkable performance on the world stage.
