Morningstar: The government has completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, and is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said her ministry plans to submit the draft to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) by the end of this year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ministry is currently engaging in further consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak. Nancy emphasized the need to consult with various stakeholders, highlighting that the bill would apply not only to the peninsula but also to states in Borneo. She mentioned the ongoing nature of these discussions as crucial for the bill’s comprehensive development.
Nancy shared these updates at a press conference following the ASEAN + Republic of Korea Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons. Present at the event were Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, Lee Jang Keun.
Nancy noted the increasing interest in the caregiving industry as a factor necessitating wider consultations. She expressed a desire to expedite the process, acknowledging the growing number of stakeholders eager to contribute to the lawmaking process through consultations.
