KUALA LUMPUR: A Senator hopes the government will consider using an e-wallet mechanism in the distribution of RON95 subsidies to eligible citizens. Senator Datuk Lim Pay Hen said the use of e-wallet is more targeted and systematic than identity cards because it will not complicate consumers when dealing at petrol stations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Senator Lim emphasized that e-wallets like Touch n Go are seen as more user-friendly, allowing the government to more easily target subsidy recipients. He noted that for those unfamiliar with e-wallets, such as the elderly, cash disbursement remains the most efficient due to its accurate delivery. Lim made these remarks during the debate on the Supply Bill 2025 at Dewan Negara.
On November 5, Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, mentioned that the government was still evaluating the best mechanism for the subsidy disbursement. Additionally, Lim expressed his hope that all government systems and transactions would become digital by next year
, aligning with the advancements of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and 5.0, which demand greater integration of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Lim questioned the current state of digitalization within Parliament, noting a continued reliance on printed materials, and urged for comprehensive digitalization efforts. Meanwhile, Senator Datuk Sivaraj Chandran suggested improvements in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, emphasizing practical training, industry exposure, and continuous assessment to enhance workforce productivity.
In the same session, Senator Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof proposed the immediate creation of a Political Funding Act to allocate resources to political parties, modeled after Germany’s system. He suggested that the allocation qualification should be based on the support or votes obtained by individuals or parties during elections, advocating for a method that is more practical.
Dewan Negara will reconvene
