SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has announced plans to extend its ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ initiative from Friday to Sunday at all business premises across the state starting next year. This move aims to further reduce the consumption of plastic bags and bolster environmental conservation efforts.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Public Health and Environment Executive Councilor Jamaliah Jamaluddin emphasized the government’s commitment to examining the necessary powers to enforce this initiative effectively. Speaking at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, Jamaliah highlighted the importance of identifying authoritative sources under the state government’s jurisdiction to ensure the proper implementation of the ban alongside enforcement actions. The announcement followed a supplementary question from Mariam Abdul Rashid (PH-Meru) regarding the continuation and intensification of Selangor’s zero plastic and polystyrene campaign.
Since 2010, Selangor has actively promoted the ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ c
ampaign, initially implemented every Saturday with significant support from supermarkets, mini markets, and various business premises. Consumers are charged 20 sen for each plastic bag, with proceeds directed towards charitable causes and consumerism and environmental conservation programs. This latest initiative seeks to expand the campaign’s impact by covering the entire weekend, reinforcing the state’s dedication to sustainable environmental practices.
