Shah Alam: The Selangor government launched the Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC), the first of its kind in Malaysia, focusing on climate change governance based on science, data, and local evidence.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah inaugurated the centre at a hotel in Shah Alam. Selangor Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin highlighted that the centre is a strategic initiative by the state government aimed at bolstering capabilities to tackle climate change challenges, such as rising temperatures, flash floods, prolonged droughts, coastal erosion, and impacts on water sources and food security.
SCAC will serve as a reference centre and a coordinator for climate change policies at the state level. It will also function as a platform to enhance collaboration with the private sector, academia, and international organisations, as detailed by Jamaliah in a statement. The Selangor Climate Change Action Council (IKLIMSELANGOR), chaired by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, is set to hold its first meeting at the end of this month.
Jamaliah further mentioned the state government’s support for SCAC’s strategic partnership with United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB). This partnership aims to aid in capacity development and assist small and medium enterprises in Selangor in transitioning to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance and reporting. The SCAC is headed by executive director Daniel Lee, who brings 18 years of experience in the climate change and environmental sustainability sector.
