Pathum thani: Two-time Commonwealth Games rhythmic gymnastics gold medallist Ng Joe Ee has announced her retirement from national gymnastics after securing a bronze medal in the individual all-around event at the SEA Games Thailand 2025, held today at Thammasat University Rangsit Campus.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Joe Ee, 20, achieved a total score of 96.890 points across the four apparatus-hoop, ball, club, and ribbon. She shared the bronze with Thailand's Piyada Peeramatukorn, while Jasmine Althea Romelo from the Philippines took gold with 102.180 points, and Mikayla Yang of Singapore claimed silver with 101.490 points.
Joe Ee aimed for gold in her final competition but faced challenges due to early nerves and mistakes in the hoop routine. She expressed regret over not meeting her gold target but took solace in her performance across the remaining apparatus which allowed her to recover points.
Reflecting on her career that started at age 13, Joe Ee discussed the physical toll and injuries that influenced her decision to retire. Despite her achievements, she highlighted ongoing back pain and a recent ankle injury as factors in her retirement decision. Joe Ee plans to transition into coaching next year, albeit not with the national team.
She expressed confidence in Malaysia's upcoming gymnasts, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations passionately. Meanwhile, Malaysia's team secured two silver medals in the group exercises. The team, consisting of Carol Na Yuan Qi, Valerie Ng, Maia Ong Xiao Han, Bernice See Qin Nin, and Syamimi Amalia Shahrizam, scored 17.660 points in ribbons and 22.500 points in three balls and two hoops, narrowly missing gold to Thailand.
Team manager Afrita Ariany Nasril voiced disappointment over the missed gold in the latter event, marking the first time since 2017, and mentioned a protest was lodged but ultimately dismissed.
The SEA Games Thailand 2025 is ongoing from December 9 to 20, spanning Bangkok and Chonburi provinces.
