Sarawak: The recent amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance marked a major turning point for the state’s energy sector, said State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi. He stated that the amendment introduces clearer, more streamlined procedures and attractive incentives, creating regulatory certainty that appeals to independent power producers and encourages private sector investment.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Julaihi emphasized that the changes are unlocking the potential for new generation projects, including renewables and hybrid solutions, to come online more swiftly and transparently, contributing to a more dynamic energy market. He highlighted that by fostering an environment that encourages innovation, accelerates project delivery, and welcomes private sector participation, Sarawak is strengthening the backbone of its economy with a reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy supply. Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 4.0), which was officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Julaihi further stated that a strong energy foundation is vital for driving industrial growth, attracting foreign investment, and ultimately improving the quality of life for all Sarawakians. He reaffirmed the state government’s continued commitment to rural electrification and grid expansion, noting that every project plays a critical role in building economic resilience and sustainable growth. He added that the state is not only building for today but laying a strong foundation for the future, and looks forward to sharing progress with regional neighbors.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki highlighted that Sarawak is driving regional collaboration through the Borneo Grid, with hydropower projects on track to extend beyond state borders, connecting Sabah, Kalimantan, and Brunei. He noted that Sarawak is setting the stage to realize a truly interconnected ASEAN Power Grid, powered by renewables. By sharing clean energy, economies can grow while reducing carbon emissions together. He also mentioned that SAREF 4.0 is part of the official program for Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, underscoring Sarawak’s pivotal role in advancing regional cooperation.
