Kuala Lumpur: Two Sabah assemblymen and another individual are expected to be charged in court later this month in connection with a corruption scandal involving mineral mining licensing in the state. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed the ongoing investigation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MACC is in the process of completing its investigation, with all three suspects having been called to provide their statements. Azam Baki stated that they are awaiting a date from the court for the charges to be filed, which is anticipated to happen by the end of the month.
Azam made these remarks after officiating the International Conference on Technology, Management and Sustainability (ICTMS 2025), organized by the Accounting Research Institute (ARI) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). When questioned about the authenticity of viral videos linked to the scandal, he emphasized that the MACC’s investigation does not solely depend on video evidence.
He added that further comments on the matter could not be provided as it might be sub judice, indicating that the evidence will be submitted to the public prosecutor for evaluation. The MACC’s investigation includes considering various forms of evidence, such as statements from individuals involved, to verify the authenticity of any audio-visual material.
Previously, several video recordings allegedly showing corruption-related conversations between certain individuals and several Sabah lawmakers concerning the mineral mining issue in the state went viral.
