Running Red Lights Among Highest Offences In Selangor During CNY

Selangor: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Selangor issued 298 notices involving various traffic offences through ‘Op Penyemaran’, an undercover road safety operation, in conjunction with the 2025 Chinese New Year from Jan 20 until yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Selangor JPJ deputy director Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat stated that the highest recorded offence was non-compliance with traffic lights, with 127 notices issued. This was followed by driving in the emergency lane, which accounted for 66 notices, while 39 notices were issued for hogging the right lane. Other significant offences included riding without a helmet, with 35 notices, and using a mobile phone while driving, resulting in 21 notices.

The operation also identified other offences such as driving without a valid licence, which led to six notices, and having expired road tax or no insurance coverage, which resulted in four notices. Ahmad Kamarunzaman highlighted that failure to comply with traffic lights can lead to prosecution under Section 72 (2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with fines ranging from RM300 to RM2,000.

Ahmad Kamarunzaman further explained that the ongoing Undercover Op employs unmarked vehicles and JPJ officers dressed in plain clothes to monitor and enforce traffic regulations effectively.
