RTS Link Passengers Can Opt for Passports or QR Codes for Immigration Clearance

Johor bahru: Passengers travelling on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link have the flexibility to choose between using their regular passports or QR codes for immigration clearance at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at the RTS Link Bukit Chagar. Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that while QR codes are available as a digital option, traditional passports remain a valid method for crossing the border.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke addressed concerns about the new digital system by confirming that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for border control, including contingency measures in case of a disruption to the digital system, are managed by the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and the Immigration Department. He assured that the QR code system is not the sole method for clearance and that passengers are free to use their regular passports.

In preparation for potential disruptions in the e-gate system, AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Suhaily Mohd Zain announced that a total of 640 officers and personnel from the agency will be stationed at the CIQ Complex. He expressed confidence in the manpower's ability to manage any situation, highlighting that the proximity to BSI would allow for rapid assistance if needed.

To ensure readiness for the RTS Link's anticipated start of operations in early 2027, over 400 AKPS officers and personnel are currently undergoing comprehensive training at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) in Segamat. They are expected to report for duty in October, followed by an orientation and simulation program until December. This training includes familiarisation with passenger flows, train operations, and the reliability of scanning machines to accommodate an estimated passenger volume of 10,000 people per hour.
