Kuala lumpur: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has praised the effectiveness of the Road To Gold (RTG) programme, highlighting the recent achievements of Malaysian badminton pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships. Tang Jie-Ee Wei secured the gold medal in mixed doubles, while Pearly-Thinaah earned the silver medal in women’s doubles.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hannah Yeoh emphasized that these successes demonstrate the value of the government’s investment in Malaysian sports. She highlighted that athletes under the RTG sign contracts pledging their commitment to the nation, making this a national investment. Yeoh noted, “In just four months, we can see its success,” pointing out the significant achievements of the RTG-supported shuttlers.
The medal-winning athletes received a warm reception upon their return to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Yeoh specifically commended Tang Jie-Ee Wei for their remarkable comeback after previously announcing their split in March. She stated that their perseverance has elevated them to global recognition as mixed doubles giants.
Yeoh also lauded Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah for their efforts, which resulted in a silver medal. She described them as an inspiration to Malaysian female shuttlers, achieving what many only dream of.
Hannah Yeoh confirmed that the athletes would be rewarded under the National Sports Incentives Scheme (SHAKAM), with gold medallists receiving RM20,000 and silver medallists RM10,000. She also mentioned discussions with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz regarding additional SHAKAM incentives, with further announcements to be made in due course.
