Pekan: Two major tournaments, the Royal Pahang Classic Centenary Cup and the Tengku Ampuan Patrons Cup, will be the highlight of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Pahang Polo Club (RPPC). Tengku Panglima Raja Brig Gen Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah announced that the tournaments would feature participation from international polo teams. 'InsyaAllah, we will have eight teams for the Centenary Cup, and eight or 10 teams for the Tengku Ampuan Cup,' he stated during the launch of RPC's 100th anniversary celebration at the East Coast Mall (ECM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the preliminary rounds are scheduled to commence on September 7 at the RPPC in Pekan, with the main tournament set for September 25-26. Tengku Amir Nasser also expressed hope that future generations would continue the sport's legacy. As part of the centenary celebration, RPPC is offering Malaysians a glimpse into its history through an interactive exhibition. This exhibition will display archival photographs and historical artefacts that trace the evolution of polo in Pahang over the past century.
Following the ECM event, the programme will proceed to the Kuantan Festival 188 from July 31 to August 2, and then to the Centenary Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) throughout August. A statement distributed at the event highlighted that the club's establishment was inspired by a royal gesture of friendship when Sultan Iskandar of Perak gifted polo horses to Sultan Abu Bakar of Pahang during a royal wedding. This gift sparked interest in polo, leading to the club's founding by Sultan Abu Bakar in 1926.
The RPPC is notable for being one of only four polo clubs in Malaysia to celebrate a centenary, and it is among the oldest polo clubs globally, having operated continuously since the 1920s.
