Kulai: A total of RM200,000 has been approved for a flood mitigation project in the high-risk area of Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu under the Kulai parliamentary’s ‘mesra rakyat’ (people-friendly) allocation. Kulai Member of Parliament Teo Nie Ching announced the project in response to four flood incidents earlier this year, which resulted in property loss, home damage, and emotional distress for the villagers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project aims to mitigate flood risks and improve the drainage system in the area to prevent future occurrences. Teo Nie Ching stated that work is actively underway by the appointed contractor and expressed gratitude towards technical agencies and local communities for their cooperation. She reaffirmed her commitment to the well-being of the people of Kulai in a Facebook post.
Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu is identified as a high-risk flood area in the Kulai district, where the existing drainage system struggles to handle the heavy rainwater flow. Since the start of the year, the village has faced four flood events, affecting over 50 houses with water levels reaching up to knee height, leading to significant property damage and emotional distress among the residents.
In response to these incidents, residents, along with the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK), submitted a complaint to local authorities and the Kulai Member of Parliament on April 14, urging for a long-term solution to the recurring flooding problem.
