Restorative Justice Programme Prepares Inmates For Reintegration, Employment Opportunities

Perlis: The 'Restorative Justice' Corrective Outreach Programme not only supports the emotional recovery of inmates at correctional centres and prisons, but also provides early exposure to employment opportunities as part of their preparation for reintegration into society, said Perlis Prison director Ab Nasif Sarahan. He said such an approach is crucial in helping inmates secure jobs upon release, thereby reducing the risk of repeating past offences.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this programme allows prospects (inmates) to understand the realities of the working world through early exposure, including job search platforms and current skills requirements. Ab Nasif shared this information with reporters at the programme held at the Perlis Correctional Centre today.

The initiative involved 20 prospects and 40 family members, and was conducted in collaboration with the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), which provided advisory services and career guidance. Ab Nasif mentioned that initiatives such as MyFutureJobs by PERKESO help prospects identify employment opportunities that match their skills and interests.

'Upon release, they need to be independent and function as members of society. Support from employers and the community is therefore vital to ensure a smooth reintegration process,' he emphasized.

Meanwhile, an inmate known only as Tam, 53, who began serving his sentence on March 13, 2024, is scheduled for release on Nov 13, 2026. The former regional manager at a banking institution admitted that his past mistakes were driven by greed, which led to his involvement in financial crimes. He is now determined to rebuild his life.

'I hope society will give us a second chance. Programmes like this open our eyes to the paths we can take after release, especially in finding employment,' Tam said. He also expressed his intention to help former inmates secure jobs and to establish a non-governmental organisation to raise awareness about crime and its consequences.
